Medieval town of Loches

Just a short distance from where we are staying is the town of Loches, which is a mixture of old and new and reminded me a little bit of York. The medieval part of the town has a wall right around it and sits on a hill overlooking the river Indre.
There is a market twice a week, on a Wednesday and Friday, and we went both days this last week. The market stalls go up and down a number of streets from the centre and are full of fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, cheese and anything else you can think of. We had fun trying to decide what to buy, the choice of cheeses was huge, in the end decided on some goat's cheese and some brie. We also tasted some different types of dried sausage and of course ended up buying some, one with olives in it and one mixed with cheese!!

This is the part that reminded me of York.

After wandering around the market we went up to the old town, up and down cobbled streets which were also very narrow amazingly still allowing some cars up them.

At the top of the hill is the Church of St Ours, It looks as if this church is going to need a lot of work soon as there is a lot of signs of damp in many areas.

Next to the church is the Royal lodgings of the Dauphin Charles V11, it was open to the public but at a cost of 8.50 euros we decided to give it a miss.

Joan of Arc apparently visited Charles after she had won the battle at Orleans.

A couple of houses up in the old part of the town.

Found this painting on a wall inside
a courtyard. Don't know who it is!!

Down in the town a more modern church.
