Once again we are on our travels catching the ferry from Dover to Calais
| On their way to the Tour de France perhaps!! |
We had a good journey across the Channel and we were soon travelling out of Calais. We decided not to travel too far to begin with just 25kms to a small village called Licques.
Our Campsite is called Des Pommiers les Trois Pays, quite large with a heated swimming pool and restaurant.
We have done a bit of exploring as we decided to stay here for a couple of days.
The joys of following a Satnav, it took us down some very narrow roads. Thank goodness we weren't towing the caravan at this time!!
We drove to a place called The Blockhaus d'Epeleques which was built during World War 2 by prisoners of war for Hitler. It was here where the Nazis were going to build the V1 and V2 bombs and launch them on London but this never happened as it was bombed and partly destroyed many times by the British and Allies.
It was certainly a very impressive site to see and very interesting to find out about this part of history. It was very moving thinking about all the construction workers, up to 35000, they needed to build this place and how many were killed during the bombings.
| One of the cattle trucks which were used to carry up to 100 people |
It was certainly a very interesting couple of hours.
We also travelled to a town called Saint Omer mainly to have a look at its Cathedral which was built during the 14th century. It looks a bit weather worn on the outside but is quite impressive inside.
